The Skin of Our Teeth
Scenic Designer: Jan Chambers
Props Director: Andrea Bullock
Props Artisan: Emma Gold Anderson
This was the first project I was given to head up at PlayMakers. I had a reference photo and a time frame but was allowed to design and build it however I wanted. I used a mixture of materials, including sheet foam, Great Stuff expanding foam, PVC pipe of different diameters, sheet aluminum, aluminum tape, glass lenses, Apoxie Sculpt, wood, and a coin turner mechanism from a bubble gum machine.

The Kraken Needs a Head
The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire
Summer 2019

A previous display that existed at the PA Ren Faire from previous years was a bunch of tentacles sticking out of a fountain with dyed black water. I added to this idea by making a Kraken head to go with the tentacles, and used a broken troll display to make it appear as if it was being drowned. I connected all of the tentacles, the kraken head, and the drowned troll parts together using PVC pipe.

Using a sheet of hard green foam, I cut 5 oval-ish shapes of slowly decreasing size, stacked them up, and glued them all together with Gorilla Glue. I then, using a foam shaver, shaped the foam into the base for the Kraken's head.

I would like to make clear that I did not create the tentacles nor the troll head and arms. The troll parts were scavenged from a broken display from a previous year. The only alterations I made to the troll was to coat everything in UreCoat (a Smooth-On product) to make it water proof and fit the head and arms with PVC pipes to attach to their bases. The tentacles required no alteration and were simply attached to the bases I made.

Pickle Costume!
.jpg)
A tradition for Halloween each season is to dress up the giant pickle decorating the Wicked Pickle store. I decided to dress up the pickle as a trick or treating ghost. I made the arms out of PVC pipe, which I shaped using a PVC Bendit. They were attached to a PVC Ring shaped so that it fit snugly around the pickle and did not slip out of place even without screwing into the pickle. The hands were made out of wooden blocks and Great Stuff spray foam. Once the arms were in place I covered the pickle with layers of muslin and cheese cloth to make the ghost costume, sewing it onto the pickle so that it couldn't be blown off in the wind.
