Foam Based Projects

Various Foam Carvings

The Skin of Our Teeth
Scenic Designer: Jan Chambers

Foam projects were carved using various tools, such as rasps, Dremels, sanding, and knives. Some projects were coated with other materials to add durability, while some projects were painted directly on the foam.

Runaway Rat

A Wrinkle in Time
PlayMakers Repertory Company
Scenic Designer: Sara Clement
Prop Master: Andrea Bullock

Prop Artisan: Emma Gold Anderson

For A Wrinkle in Time the director wanted to have a remote controlled rat that could be driven around stage. Emma achieved this by shaping foam into the shape of a large rat and hollowing out the underside so that it could fit on top of an RC car. The foam was covered with faux fur and details were added with Model Magic, wire, cloth, and beads. And, while not noticeable on stage, it had clear monofilament whiskers.

Pickle Costume!

PA Renaissance Faire
Prop Artisan: Emma Gold Anderson

A tradition for Halloween each season is to dress up the giant pickle decorating the Wicked Pickle store. I decided to dress up the pickle as a trick or treating ghost. I made the arms out of PVC pipe, which I shaped using a PVC Bendit. They were attached to a PVC Ring shaped so that it fit snugly around the pickle and did not slip out of place even without screwing into the pickle. The hands were made out of wooden blocks and Great Stuff spray foam. Once the arms were in place I covered the pickle with layers of muslin and cheese cloth to make the ghost costume, sewing it onto the pickle so that it couldn't be blown off in the wind.
